Tribal Gaming in Arizona is so much more than commercial casinos and resorts.  Since the Gaming Compact was signed between Arizona and Tribes in 2002, Tribal Gaming has helped Tribal Communities overcome centuries of displacement and limited economic opportunities to become stronger, self-governing communities. Not only does this create opportunities for the Tribes themselves, but also for the communities that surround them, especially in rural areas of Arizona.

Over the next few months, we will present a series of profiles that reflect some of the many faces of Tribal Gaming. Our first begins with Leona Kakar, member of the Ak-Chin Indian Community. In it, she speaks about life before Tribal Gaming, and the opportunities for her community and the surrounding area since.
