City officials have been working with local veterans organizations for more than two years on plans for an expansive memorial, called the Field of Honor, which would include rows of pillars to replicate the U.S. flag across an open field. A committee has been working on fundraising for the project, which has raised about $673,000 to date. The effort was given a major boost with a $500,000 pledge from the Gila River Indian Community.
